The first question most Johor Bahru homeowners ask us is: artificial grass or real grass? The answer depends on your yard and how you live. Four questions help you decide.
1. How much sun does the area get?
Natural grass needs enough sunlight. Under eaves, along walls or beneath large trees, it tends to thin out, yellow or grow moss. Artificial turf is usually the steadier choice there. In a front yard with full sun, natural carpet grass can look excellent.
2. How will you use it?
- Children and pets running around: artificial turf handles wear and does not turn muddy.
- Mostly to look at, with light foot traffic: natural grass feels softer and cooler.
- Cars driving over it: a paver-and-grass grid puts pavers under the wheels and grass in between.
3. How much upkeep are you willing to do?
Natural grass needs regular cutting, weeding and fertilising, and attention to drainage in the rainy season. Artificial turf needs no mowing, but it still needs rinsing, leaf clearing and, with pets, regular cleaning. Neither is maintenance-free.
4. How should you think about budget?
Artificial turf costs more at the start for materials and base preparation, then little to maintain. Natural grass costs less up front but has ongoing upkeep. Compare the total over several years, not just the first quotation.
The base matters more than the grass
Whichever you choose, levelling, compaction and drainage decide how the lawn looks years later. With Malaysian monsoon rain, poor drainage means waterlogged roots for real grass and dips and puddles for artificial turf.
Many gardens use both
A common layout: natural grass on the sunny open area, artificial turf in shaded corners, along paths and in play areas, tied together with stepping stones. It looks good, works well and is easier to maintain.
